Inshore lifeboat launched after Kayaker raises alarm 21/7/16

Kayaker Raises Alarm for Volunteer Crew

Dunbar volunteer lifeboat crew were called to assist a small motorboat that was drifting without power near the town’s harbour on Thursday evening (July 21).

The alarm was raised at 5.30pm when one of the three-person crew aboard the Solent Runner alerted a passing kayaker to send for help because they were struggling to get good mobile phone reception to call the coastguard.

By the time the kayaker reached the lifeboat station, however, the coastguard had been informed.

Dunbar’s D class in-shore lifeboat (ILB) Jimmy Miff was launched but by the time they reached the boat the crew had restored power.

The volunteer crew watched over as they steered safely into the harbour. One of the Solent Runner’s crew was suffering from minor seasickness while another was feeling the effects of the cold but all three crew returned to shore safely.

After the callout the ILB returned to the boathouse and was refuelled and ready for service within the hour.

Crew: Gordon Kirkham, Alan Blair, Gaz Crowe, Chris Woods.
